Attendance

Regular attendance is an important part of student success. If your student will be absent, please notify Ferguson Hall as soon as possible. The information below explains how to report an absence, the different types of absences, and attendance procedures.

✔ Medical absences require documentation.

✔ Students have three days to submit a written excuse if the absence was not reported.

✔ Regular attendance supports academic success and helps students stay connected to classroom learning.

When reporting an absence, please include:

  • Student's name
  • Reason for absence
  • Parent/guardian name
  • Phone number
  • Relationship to the student

Note: If an absence is not reported by phone or email, students have three school days to submit a written note. After that, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Types of Absences

  • Medical documentation from a healthcare provider is required.

    Doctor's notes should include all dates the student was absent.

    Students and families should also follow current CDC, Greene County Public Health, and district guidelines regarding communicable illnesses.

  • Parents may excuse up to 10 absences each school year.

    After 10 parent-excused absences, medical documentation is required for additional absences to be excused.

    Acceptable reasons include:

    • Personal illness

    • Family illness necessitating presence of child

    • Quarantine of home

    • Death in the family

    • Work at home necessitated by absence or incapacity of parent or guardian

    • Observation or celebration of holiday

    • Out of state travel (up to 24 hours) for a district approved extra-curricular activity

    • Medical or dental appointments

    • Medically necessary leave for pregnant student

    • Service as a precinct officer at a primary, special, or general election with principal approval

    • Pre-approved family vacations up to 5 days

    • Pre-approved college visit

    • Others as reviewed and approved by the Superintendent

  • Examples include:

    • Oversleeping
    • Missing the bus
    • Running late
    • Car trouble
    • Student refusal
    • Vacations without prior approval
    • More than five vacation days
    • Suspensions
    • Personal reasons without explanation
  • Planning a vacation during the school year?

    State law allows up to five excused vacation days each school year when approved in advance.

    Before your trip:

    1. Complete the Vacation Request Form. Vacation Request Form
    2. Submit the form at least five school days before departure.
    3. Work with teachers to complete any missed assignments or assessments.
